Spring Project: Plant Bulbs for the Summer
Planting bulbs is an easy way to bring your garden to life with beautiful flowers. There are many different colors, forms and flowering times to choose from. Our selection of bulbs make it easy to find bulbs that will work in almost any situation.
Spring blooming bulbs include crocus, daffodils, hyacinths, snowdrops, and tulips. These bulbs must be planted in the fall, before the ground freezes. They flower from January through June.
Summer blooming bulbs include cannas, dahlias, gladioli and lilies are planted in spring, after the last frost, and flower from June through October.
There are different types of bulbs, but they all have one thing in common: they store food in a fleshy structure commonly called a “bulb.” There are four types of bulbs:
– True Bulbs include daffodils, hyacinth, lilies, and tulips.
– Corms give rise to flowers, such as crocus and gladioli.
– Rhizomes give rise to flowers, such as canna and iris.
– Tubers grow up to be anemones, dahlias and ranunculus.
We have a large selection of summer blooming bulbs. Some of our favorites include:
Gladiolas bloom all summer. The tall collection of colorful flowers attract hummingbirds, and they are rabbit, squirrel and deer resistant. To have a continual harvest of flower spikes, plant a few corms every two weeks until early summer.
Gladiolus Grande Passion
Dahlias bloom in the mid-summer through the fall. They attract butterflies, and they’re squirrel, deer and rabbit resistant. Their bright big blooms are a classic showstopper.
Dahlia Rip City and Dahlia Crème de Cassis
Lilies bloom in the mid-summer, and they attract butterflies too.
Double Layer Lily-Tiger
Elephant Ears make a great addition to any landscape, and will give your garden (or container) an instant tropical look.

Cannas are a fast growing bulb with stunning bright flowers. Their yellow, orange and red-hued blooms attract butterflies, and they’re squirrel, deer and rabbit resistant.
Canna
There are general planting guidelines for bulbs. Follow these steps:
– Dig a hole three to four times deeper than the bulb height.
– Set bulbs firmly in place, following the spacing guidelines on the bulb package.
– Sprinkle in a fertilizer made for bulbs, such as Espoma Bulb-tone.
– Cover with soil.
– Water thoroughly.
